SHORELINES
Issue
One – July 2006

Today is July 4th,
2006. Take a look around and notice where you are,
where you live, what you are doing and how you are
living your life. Observe the environment and
circumstances you are choosing for yourself. Get
very present in this moment.
Now go deeper
and check out the beliefs you are holding onto, the
attitudes you embrace and the way you are showing up
in the world. Look at where you are overflowing with
energy and excitement. Face what is slowing you
down, holding you back. Do you like what you see? Is
this a life that fulfills and nourishes you? Are you
being all that you imagine yourself to be? How is it
to just be in this moment?
Okay, now take a
look ahead. Look ahead to July 4th, 2011.
That’s five years from today and five more years
of your life. What do you see for yourself? What has
changed? Who are you now? What choices have you made
that you are proud of? Where is there meaning and
satisfaction? What’s the most compelling aspect of
your future life?
For most of us,
time moves much faster than we’d like. Days, weeks
and months go by and soon we discover that five
years isn’t such a long time after all. Sometimes
when we want to accomplish something we get stuck in
the overwhelm of feeling that it will take “too
long”. For example, we tell ourselves that it
takes too long to lose weight, change careers, earn
a degree, create a business, train for a marathon,
build a house, save for a vacation and any number of
things we dream of doing.
Now I just have
to ask you – What have you been doing for the last
five years? What was your life like then? Where have
you invested your time and energy? What have you
done that has brought you to where you are today,
brought you closer to the edge, closer to your goal?
Here again in
this moment I wonder - What if you used the next
five years to finally turn the corner? What if you
made up your mind that this time you wouldn’t wimp
out on yourself, wouldn’t make excuses, wouldn’t
sabotage the process? What if you just laid out a
plan and took the measured, methodical steps to get
there? What will you be saying about yourself in
five years? Will there be pride and joy in the
celebration of your accomplishments?
Make a choice
today that will move your life forward. It’s not
too late! Choose to empower yourself for the benefit
of your “whole” life. Like the solid foundation
of a house, momentum is built with consistent and
intentional actions. What will you build for your
future self today?
