November seems as good a time as any to
introduce a new format for my newsletter. I love
experimenting and being curious – all the things
I ask of my clients. It's not perfect and I'm still
refining so your comments on this "new way" of
communicating are most welcome. Be
inspired!
“Your life is the most important story you will ever
tell, and you’re telling it right now, whether you know
it or not.” Jim Loehr
We all have a story. Stories about our health, our
money, our relationships, our careers. Some of us have
stories that propel us forward, make us want to do more
and be more. Our stories can bring us enormous joy,
wealth and peace of mind. Sometimes our stories drive us
to compete, to strive, to accomplish great things. Our
stories might help us fulfill our dreams and make a
difference in the world. And sometimes they don’t.
Maybe you
have a story that keeps you stuck, limits how you see
the world or stops you from feeling happy and fulfilled.
Maybe you have a disempowering story about your income,
family, stress or responsibility. Maybe one of your
stories sounds like one of mine.
For many years I clung to a story that I wasn’t educated
enough to be successful. I believed that since I had
never earned a high school diploma, College or
University degree, that I would never have what I
wanted. I can trace this belief back to experiences in
my teens and early twenties when I was told that my lack
of education was a barrier. I believed what I heard in
spite of what I knew about myself.
With a passion for learning there has been very little
time in my adult life when I was not a student. I’ve
worked hard for and achieved many designations
(including that illusive High School Diploma) that speak
directly to my interests and talents. I have
certificates from reputable institutions and even
captured those precious initials to stand behind my
name. I have so much to be proud of and especially my
willingness to keep learning. However, no matter what I
did there was always a sense that it wasn’t enough
because … I had a story about that!
Now when I look at the truth of my story I see that I was
… and am … highly educated. I am knowledgeable and
articulate and have all the skills and talents I need to
reach any goal I set for myself. Now, that’s a very
different story! As long as I continued to believe
something disempowering about myself I was stuck in a
rut. Rewriting my story … based on truth … gives me the
freedom to see myself as I really am. As a coach, I help
people rewrite their stories – finding the truth and
giving them the opportunity to be all that they want.
Question of the month:
“What story do you need to rewrite?”
